Sports card grading is a process by which professional grading companies evaluate and assign a numerical grade to a sports card based on its condition. The purpose of grading is to provide a standardized assessment of a card’s overall condition, helping collectors and investors understand its quality and authenticity. The grading process typically involves the following steps:
Submission: Collectors or sellers submit their sports cards to a grading company for evaluation. The cards are often sent in protective holders or cases to prevent damage during transit.
Examination: Trained and experienced graders carefully examine each card. They assess various factors, including the card’s centering, corners, edges, surface, and overall aesthetic appeal.
Assigning a Grade: Based on the examination, graders assign a numerical grade to the card using a standardized scale. The most widely used grading scale goes from 1 to 10, with half-point increments. A grade of 10 is considered “Gem Mint,” indicating virtually flawless condition.Grades are generally classified as follows:
- Gem Mint (GM) – 10
- Mint (M) – 9
- Near Mint-Mint (NM-MT) – 8
- Near Mint (NM) – 7
- Excellent-Mint (EX-MT) – 6
- Excellent (EX) – 5
- Very Good-Excellent (VG-EX) – 4
- Very Good (VG) – 3
- Good (G) – 2
- Fair (F)
- Poor Encapsulation: After grading, the card is typically encapsulated in a tamper-evident holder, often made of hard plastic. This holder includes information about the card’s grade, identifying details, and sometimes additional notes from the grader.
Sports card grading serves several purposes:
Authentication: Grading companies verify the authenticity of the card, ensuring that it is genuine and has not been altered or tampered with.
Condition Assessment: The grade assigned to the card provides a standardized assessment of its overall condition, including any flaws or imperfections.
Market Value: Graded cards often have a higher market value compared to their ungraded counterparts. The grade serves as a quick reference for potential buyers, allowing them to assess the card’s quality.
Popular sports card grading companies include Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), Beckett Grading Services (BGS), and Sportscard Guaranty (SGC), among others. Collectors often consider the reputation and grading standards of the company when choosing where to submit their cards for grading. Sports card grading has never been more popular than the numbers we saw in 2023. Will it continue the same way into 2024?
